All About Apples

I've been so excited for Fall to get here.  It is by far my most favorite season! We had been waiting for the first day of fall to come, so we could start on some fun fall activities.  So the last week of September was all about Apples.

I was hoping to take the girls apple picking, but I have been sick the past couple of weeks.  Instead we walked up to AJ's, a gourmet grocery store within walking distance to our house.  We chose 6 different types of apples and the girls were excited about our little field trip.  When we got back, Joleigh and Noelle each chose which ones they liked the best just based on how they looked.

We discussed similarities and differences of the apples and also talked about the different types of apples.

We lined up the apples and the girls estimated how many seeds they thought each apple had.

 Here are their guesses.
We cut open the apples down the middle horizontally to show the star shape of the core and counted the seeds (I forgot to take a picture).  The girls were surprised that there were so few seeds in each apple.
Afterwards, we taste tested each one.  All three of us had a different favorite.

With some older, smaller apples that I had in the refrigerator, we cut them up and did some apple painting.

Later in the day, Noelle helped me make some apple chips.  Unfortunately, I didn't cook them long enough so they didn't get crispy, but they were yummy.

On Day 2, Jaelyn was with us.  We read books about apples and discussed the apple growing process.

The girls worked on a cutting and gluing project to show the growing process.

Day 3 was all about the parts of the apples.

We talked about all the yummy things we use apples for and made a list.

It was so much fun to have some extra activities to incorporate into our usual homeschool routine.  I loved how excited the girls were and it really got us into the fall spirit, even though it is still 100 degrees out.  We especially loved eating and drinking apple treats throughout the week too.

Stay tuned for our week about fall leaves. pumpkins and Halloween fun!
